What did Henry VIII really look like? We know his face better than almost any pre-photographic monarch, because Hans Holbein the Younger painted him from life multiple times in the 1530s. In his youth, Henry was genuinely impressive. The youthful descriptions (Giustinian, 1519) describe a handsome, athletic man who is almost unrecognisable as the heavy, fleshy figure Holbein painted just 18 years later. The change was rapid, especially after the 1536 jousting accident.

Holbein's portraits, while painted from life, still serve as propaganda. The Whitehall mural in particular was designed to project overwhelming royal power. The iconic wide-legged stance and squared shoulders may exaggerate his physical dominance, though his armour confirms he was genuinely large.

The degree of obesity in his final years (1540s) is debated. His armour suggests a 54-inch waist, but some historians argue the armour dimensions include padding. Even allowing for padding, the expansion from 35 to 50+ inches is clear.
