What did Henry VIII really look like? We know his face better than almost any pre-photographic monarch, because Hans Holbein the Younger painted him from life multiple times in the 1530s. The Thyssen portrait (c. 1537) shows a broad, fleshy face with small blue eyes set close together, a small pursed mouth, a thin reddish-gold beard, and a complexion that was once fair and ruddy. The full-length Whitehall mural (1537), destroyed by fire in 1698 but preserved in copies and the surviving cartoon, established the iconic power stance: legs apart, shoulders squared, filling every inch of the frame.

In his youth, Henry was genuinely impressive. The Venetian ambassador Sebastiano Giustinian described him around age 28 as "the handsomest potentate I ever set eyes on; above the usual height, with an extremely fine calf to his leg, his complexion very fair and bright, with auburn hair combed straight and short, in the French fashion, and a round face so very beautiful, that it would become a pretty woman." This was a private dispatch to the Venetian Senate, not flattery.

His surviving armour at the Royal Armouries tells the physical story in steel. The armour made for him at Greenwich in 1520 (age 29) fits a man of about 6’1” with a 35-inch waist and a 45-inch chest.
