How We Know Them

Every white shark has a face. Not in any human sense — they don't emote, they don't make eye contact that means what mammalian eye contact means — but each one carries a unique set of marks. Pigmentation along the flanks and gill region. The trailing edge of the dorsal fin, nicked and notched over a lifetime. Scars. Deformities. Size. These marks are stable. Many of them are permanent. And in skilled hands, they are enough to tell one white shark from another the way a fingerprint identifies a person.

This is photo-ID.

The method

Three categories of marker. First: pigmentation — the dark-and-light patterning that varies between individuals, especially around the gill slits and pectoral insertions. Stable over time. Matchable across photographs taken years apart.

Second: dorsal fin morphology. The trailing edge accumulates nicks, notches, and irregularities as the shark ages. Once established, these profiles are persistent and individually distinctive.1 A clear lateral photograph of the dorsal fin can be matched against the catalogue — often within minutes.

Third: scars and structural deformities. Imax's bent tail. Scarface's gouges. These are the easy identifications, but also the rarest. Most white sharks don't carry marks this obvious. Most IDs depend on the slower work of pigmentation and fin comparison.

Who does this work

The Fox Shark Research Foundation, co-founded by Andrew Fox, Rodney Fox, and Dr Rachel Robbins.2 Rodney Fox survived a white shark attack in 19633 and spent the rest of his life in shark research. Andrew Fox built the photo-ID programme into one of the most comprehensive long-term white shark monitoring efforts anywhere. Robbins has been central to both the database and the field methodology.2

The academic side is led largely by Charlie Huveneers and the Southern Shark Ecology Group at Flinders University.4 Peer-reviewed work on residency, behaviour, social structure, the effects of cage-diving on individual sharks5 — all of it comes back to the database.

The scale

Over two thousand individually identified white sharks.2 That is not a population census. It is a record of encounters: each entry is an animal that was photographed, compared against existing records, and either matched or entered as new. Some have been recorded once. Others — Imax, Moo, Mrs Moo — dozens of times over more than a decade.

The database grows every season. It does not capture the sharks that were present but not photographed, or photographed but not clearly enough. It records what was observed.

Why it matters

Knowing that white sharks exist at the Neptune Islands is one thing. Knowing which white sharks — when they arrive, how long they stay, how often they return — is something else entirely. "White sharks aggregate at the Neptune Islands" is a population-level statement. "This specific shark has returned for sixteen consecutive years" is the kind of data that lets you ask real questions: about site fidelity, seasonal movement, body size and residency, whether cage-diving changes individual behaviour.

Those are the questions Huveneers, Fox, Robbins, and their colleagues have spent twenty years answering. The published research is built on the unglamorous repetition of photographing dorsal fins and matching pigmentation across years. It requires a consistent site, a committed team, sustained funding, and institutional memory measured in decades. The Foundation has provided all four.
