Identifying mark

Distinctive dorsal fin profile and pigmentation pattern

Jonny likes to look. When he arrives at the start of a season, he lifts his head from the water and examines the boat and the people on it.2 It has made him a favourite with documentary crews.

He's a 4.6-metre male, a regular seasonal visitor, identified by his dorsal fin profile and pigmentation — nothing as dramatic as Imax's bent tail, but reliable enough to confirm him year after year.2

The notable thing about Jonny is what he was caught doing. He has been directly observed capturing stingrays — one of the very few individually identified white sharks with a specific predation behaviour on record.1 Most of the two thousand-plus sharks in the database have no recorded hunting data at all. Not because they don't hunt, but because it almost never happens where anyone can see it. Jonny's kills were witnessed.

Behavioural Notes

Directly observed capturing stingrays — rare documented predation event for an individually identified white shark.1 Also known for spy-hopping: lifting head above the surface to examine the boat, especially on first seasonal appearances.2
